Grand finale

Old Illts bring the curtain down on a very good season in the best possible way, with a promotion shoot out away at Cambrian followed by the presentation evening in the evening at Cardiff Arms Park, with Phil Steele as guest speaker.

The top 3 teams in the league are a long way clear from the rest of the league in terms of points gained, and as such one side was always going to be unlucky and end up as the Bridesmaid this season. Cambrian could justifiably argue that they deserve the second promotion spot behind champions Aberdare, both as the only side to lower the league winners colours this season and with the fact that they would already have clinched promotion without the 8 point deduction they suffered in December.

However, as it stands the Illts are one point ahead, although Cambrian have a game in hand at home to mid district rivals Cilfynydd and this makes them favourites to seal second spot. There are a lot of mathematical possibilities, but broadly speaking any Cambrian win will guarantee they are promoted and a draw or an Illts win will mean promotion depends on the result of Cambrians final game against Cilfynydd. Only a try bonus point win with Cambrian getting no points (no try bonus and no losing bonus) can guarantee an Old Illts promotion.

In the reverse fixture, Cambrian were missing several players and ran into an Illts side that delivered probably their best performance of the season to win 44-7. Winning at the Tump will be a different prospect, where Cambrian have a tremendous home record winning all 9 league games to date this season but that is the task facing the Illts on Saturday. It is a big ask, but you can’t ask for more than having promotion on the line in the last game of the season.

Due to both teams having their end of season dinners on Saturday evening, the game will kick off at 12PM. The Illts will be travelling straight back to Cardiff after the game and will not be enjoying the post match hospitality of the home team, so whatever the result on Saturday, the Illts would like to congratulate Cambrian (and champions Aberdare) on a tough promotion race and an excellent season.

To the Old Illts supporters, if you can please travel and support the boys who have worked so hard this season. Come on the Illts!
