Weekend round up 23/24 September

After 2 weeks to mull on a heavy home defeat to Taffs Well, the Illts bounced back with a hard fought if scrappy derby win at Llandaff North. A disastrous start saw the Illts 7-0 down after the kick off was allowed to bounce, but they fought back with 2 well taken tries through Rhys Hutchings and Dan Savager, before conceding a harsh penalty try after a speculative kick through from the home team. 2 penalties nudged the home team in front but a second from Hutchings meant the Illts only trailed by a point at half time. The second half was even more scrappy than the first with the breakdown a mess, the Illts couldn’t gain continuity but with the wind behind them and a dominant set piece they had a stranglehold on possession and territory. A couple of well struck penalties from Sean Cochlin was enough to see them home for a 25-20 win. The end of the game was marred by a potentially serious injury to Olly Randall, big thanks to the physio and spectator from Llandaff North who assisted Jarv in looking after him until the ambulance arrived – thankfully Olly is ok.

On Sunday the minis travelled to Taffs Well, the under 7s took on Whitchurch with some great rugby being played, hat tricks for Charlie and Zach, a first try for Polly and a try on his first game for Oscar, and some great running and tagging by Mille, Jack, Tommy, Sean, Martha and Kai. The under 8s took on Whitchurch and Taffs Well, again playing some fantastic rugby following on from last weeks display on Cardiff Arms Park, I didn’t see all of the matches but saw enough to see that pretty much everyone got on the scoresheet! The under 9s had a tough game against a strong Taffs Well team, but continue to improve their tackling and passing, with some great tries from Zach as a reward. Display of the day went to the u10s who produce a fantastic display of tackling and handling against Whitchurch, with 11 tries including a hatrick for Jayden and 2 for Fin. The boys then had to play immediately against a rested Taffs Well team but produced another great display being edged out 3-2.

Next week the first travel across the city again to play Llandaff, with the Under 10s making the same trip on Sunday to play at the Cardiff and District Festival. Please support if you can
