RIP Mike Davis (UPDATED)

O.I.R.F.C. is saddened to announce the passing after a long illness of former First Team Captain, Mike Davis. Mike came to Cardiff as a young Quantity Surveyor in the Sixties, and joined the Illts having been persuaded by Tim Johns that it was a much better club than the Old Pens! He played with distinction at Number 8 and subsequently served as Fixture Secretary, and committee-man. Mike regularly supported the Old Boys, with his most recent touchline appearance several weeks ago.

Mike’s dry sense of humour, served him well during the Welsh glory years of the Seventies as the solitary Englishman at the Club! When the tables turned in more recent years, Mike was always too well-mannered to gloat. In fact, his nickname became “Brett” in homage to Roger Moore’s portrayal of “Lord Brett Sinclair”, the archetypal English gentleman of the TV series “The Persuaders”. At the Glamorganshire Golf Club where Mike was a member for over 50 years, he was known as “Quinters” meaning “Quintessential Englishman”. Mike was a very talented single figure golfer who was winning trophies as recently as two years ago. He also captained the Glamorganshire, and more recently also joined Royal Porthcawl.

Mike changed career, going into partnership with David Baker as an Estate Agent in Penarth until his recent retirement. Sadly he lost his wife Mary a few years ago and has endured a torrid time since, always with fortitude and good humour. We extend our sympathies to Mike’s family. His funeral will take place in Thursday December 8th, at All Saints Church, Victoria Square, Penarth at 12:45. A thorough gentleman!  May he rest in peace.

UPDATE - Mikes family have requested that colourful clothing is worn in memory of Mike. Private family burial so please go from church directly to Glamorganshire Golf Club.
